Gerald is a writer and freelance journalist specialising in self build, home design and construction. He is currently a member of the Ask the Expert panel at Build It Live shows held annually at Maidstone, Bicester and Exeter.
Gerald was shortlisted for Consumer Magazine Property Journalist of the Year at the 2017 and 2019 Property Press Awards and for Sustainability Journalist of theYear 2021. You can check out a selection of sustainability pieces on the Topping Out page.
He was the launch editor of SelfBuild & Design magazine and subsequently consulting editor, contributing Topping Out, a monthly comment column. His work has appeared in The Daily Telegraph Sunday Magazine, Reader's Digest, Ideal Home, She and Kitchens, Bedrooms & Bathrooms.
He is the author of 13 books, including novels, film novelisations, biographies and a self-build manual. They include Gregory's Girl (W.H. Allen, 1981; Collins Educational/Armada Lion 1983), which became a GCSE set text, Sid and Nancy (Methuen, 1986), Superstition (Ebury Press, 1990), a co-authored autobiography, and Build Your Own Brick House (Crowood 2013).
He has written four feature-length screenplays, Smiling Willie and the Tiger, Unfinished Temples, Summoning Angels and The Tower, as well as numerous short film scripts, including The Intruder (2013 ) featuring Enver Gjokaj (The Avengers, Invasion) (www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQDC5ZxqgcY). He acted as script editor on the independent film Closure, shot in Los Angeles in 2009.
He has also written Ben's Dad & The Bone Stone, a book for 8-12 year olds.
His short stories have appeared in the anthologies Aliens (IRON Press, 2021), One Way Ticket (Starry Eyed Press, 2023) and How the World Really Is (AudioArcadia.com, 2023) all available from Amazon.
A former deputy chief sub-editor of Reader's Digest, he is an experienced copy editor and proof reader. He is a member of the Writers Guild of Great Britain.
