Gerald is a writer and freelance journalist specialising in self build, home design and construction. He was shortlisted for Consumer Magazine Property Journalist of the Year at the 2017 Property Press Awards.
He was the launch editor of SelfBuild & Design magazine and is now consulting editor, contributing Topping Out, a monthly comment column. His work has appeared in The Daily Telegraph Sunday Magazine, Reader's Digest, Ideal Home, She and Kitchens, Bedrooms & Bathrooms.
He is the author of 13 books, including novels, film novelisations, biographies and a self-build manual. They include Gregory's Girl (W.H. Allen, 1981; Collins Educational/Armada Lion 1983), which became a GCSE set text, Sid and Nancy (Methuen, 1986), Superstition (Ebury Press, 1990), a co-authored autobiography, and Build Your Own Brick House (Crowood 2013).
He has written four feature-length screenplays, Smiling Willie and the Tiger, Unfinished Temples, Summoning Angels and The Tower, as well as numerous short film scripts, including The Intruder (2013). He acted as script editor on the independent film Closure, shot in Los Angeles in 2009.
He has also written Ben's Dad & The Bone Stone, a book for 8-12 year olds.
A former deputy chief sub-editor of Reader's Digest, he is an experienced copy editor and proof reader.
